Notes

Alanbrooke school is first mentioned in the "Coronation List".

This is a schedule of schools that existed in 1952.

The exact location of the school and when it opened/closed are not known.

The map pin shows the approximate location in a military camp in Gilgil (courtesy of Robert Ding).

A photograph dated 1960 showing the children with Headteacher Mr Rodman.

Memories of Gill Hughes and Robert Ding:
GH.......I was there in 1953. We were driven there in a 3ton truck with a soldier with a gun.
The school itself was one big room and all ages up to 14yrs old.
One really weird memory was when we were in the car with dad there was an ostrich in a field and father used to try and drive faster than it.

RD.......We still went to the school in a 3 ton truck in 1960, with a soldier escort. It didn't turn up one morning so me and a couple of others decided to walk it. Caused some consternation!

GH.......I bet!
We as children didn't really comprehend how much danger we were in.
We were in a group of about six married quarters built of wood and on stilts to fool the snakes.
We had Kenyan soldiers stationed in the middle of us all and we, as little horrors, used to climb up their tents and slide down!!
