The name 'Andrew Humphrey' was in honour of Air Vice Marshall Sir Andrew Humphrey. It had been originally applied to the Gütersloh school which was subsequently renamed Blankenhagen.

Griffon and Merlin were two schools side by side one was a mirror image of the other.
They were named after the aero-engines developed by Rolls Royce, both being fitted to the Spitfire at some point during WW2.
Griffon was the school on the LHS.
